Ours! Ours! This is ALL OURS!!

Diff’rent Strokes is one of my favorite TV show from the 80’s. It is about 2 African american kids from Harlem, Willis and Arnold, who are adopted into a rich white family consisting of Philip Drummond his teenage daughter Kimberly. I have been watching quite a few of these lately. Gary Coleman as Arnold Jackson with his “Watchu talkin about?” line is adorable. The series is full of humorous one-liners and funny situations.

In the episode ‘The Club Meeting’, Arnold and Willis suddenly realise that their adoption into the family means everything in their new home is theirs! The realisation elicits a memorable response from Arnold who proclaims “Ours! Ours! This is ALL OURS!!”.

This scene touched me cause it suddenly made me realise my own adoption into the family of God. The family of GOD! (Romans 8:14-15)

So, Romans 8:16-17 makes it clear we are ‘heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ’. Let that sink in for a bit. JOINT HEIRS WITH CHRIST? In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus himself prayed “And the glory which You gave Me I have given them” (John 17:22). We get to share the glory Jesus has been given? How much better can it get than that! Do you get it? Everything that Jesus has been given by the Father is being shared with us! Jesus’ Father is OUR Father! What OUR Father has is OURS! We’re rich! FILTHY RICH! “Ours! Ours! This is ALL OURS!!”

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
